Is Quizlet good for learning vocabulary?
Yes, for regular review of word lists you choose yourself, with limits worth knowing. Quizlet flashcards now have a spaced repetition mode that brings each card back after minutes, about a day or four or more days depending on how well you recalled it, but only on the website; Learn and Test are subscriber features with a free taster; and a 2024 meta-analysis of 23 studies found moderate vocabulary gains for Quizlet groups over control groups.
Key points
- Quizlet is free to download and has 1,138,677 ratings on the US App Store, averaging 4.8 out of 5; version 10.58 came out on 26 October 2026 (Apple iTunes lookup, checked 31 October 2026).
- Spaced repetition in Flashcards: Repeat brings a card back within minutes, Okay in about a day, Easy in four or more days. Quizlet's help says the mode is "currently only available on the Quizlet website" (Quizlet Help).
- Free accounts get one practice test per set in Test and a free session in Learn; Learn and Test are otherwise for subscribers (Quizlet Help: Learn; Test). The US App Store lists Quizlet Plus at $9.99 and $44.99 and Plus Unlimited at $44.99 (App Store).
- A meta-analysis of 23 studies found a moderate effect of Quizlet on vocabulary achievement (g = 0.62, 21 studies) and retention (g = 0.74, 5 studies); 22 of the 23 studies were on English (Özdemir & Seçkin, 2024).
- Six alternatives sorted by US App Store ratings: Memrise 217,564, Brainscape 21,607, Noji 14,020, Knowt 11,211, AnkiMobile 2,370 and Clozemaster 2,095 (table below).
Is Quizlet good for learning vocabulary?
Quizlet is a good fit if you already have a list of words, from a course, a teacher or your own reading, and want a quick way to turn it into flashcards and review it on your phone or computer. It is a weaker fit if you want to keep several thousand words for years: its spaced repetition mode works only on the website, the help pages describe the schedule only for the next review, and the practice modes that test you in several ways, Learn and Test, are paid beyond a free taster.
What makes any flashcard app work for vocabulary is the same: reviews spread over days and weeks, and trying to recall each word before you turn the card. Both are explained, with the studies behind them, in our guide to spaced repetition. Quizlet supports both, with the limits described in the sections below.

Quizlet's App Store description says over 60 million students, teachers and lifelong learners use it, and lists flashcards and study guides made from typed or uploaded notes, Learn, practice tests, spaced repetition, retention insights, a homework helper called Ask Quizlet that gives explanations, podcasts made from your sets and a puzzle game called Charms (App Store). For vocabulary, the parts that matter are flashcards with spaced repetition, Learn, Test and offline study, covered below.
Does Quizlet use spaced repetition?
Yes, in Flashcards, on the website. Quizlet's help article "Studying with Spaced Repetition" describes a study method you pick in Flashcards, next to Browse cards and Basic sorting; for larger sets it may already be switched on (Quizlet Help). After each card you rate how well you remembered it, and Quizlet decides when to show it again:
| Rating | Meaning | Card comes back |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat | You did not remember it | Within minutes |
| Hard | You remembered it with difficulty | Soon |
| Okay | You remembered it | Typically in about a day |
| Easy | You remembered it easily | Typically in four or more days |
The same article lists a "New cards per day" setting, marks cards not yet reviewed as New, keeps the review going until no cards are due and may send a daily reminder at 10 a.m. local time when cards are waiting. It says the mode is "currently only available on the Quizlet website", so it is not in the iPhone or Android app. The article does not say which plan it needs, and it does not describe how the gaps grow after the first four or more days.
That last point matters for vocabulary. In the largest study of review gaps, the gap that gave the best recall a year later was about three weeks (Cepeda et al., 2008, summarised in our spaced repetition guide). If you want to keep words for months, check that cards you know well really do come back weeks apart, not every few days.
What do Learn and Test do?
Learn builds a "personalized study path based on your goals and how familiar you are with the set's content" (Quizlet Help: Learn). You choose a goal, then answer questions in different formats. For vocabulary, the useful options are:
- answering with the term, the definition or a specific language, so you can practise in both directions;
- written questions, with "Retype correct answers" for the ones you missed, which makes you produce the word rather than recognise it;
- Write mode and Spell mode, and a choice of grading options;
- studying only starred terms, which suits the words you keep getting wrong.
Learn is for Quizlet Plus subscribers; without a subscription you can start a free session to try it. Students in a teacher's class get free access to Learn and Test for the sets the teacher adds.
Test builds a practice test from a set with the number and types of questions you choose. It is for subscribers, and non-subscribers get "one free practice test per flashcard set" (Quizlet Help: Test).
What can you do on Quizlet for free?
- Make and study sets. A free account covers flashcards, practice questions, interactive diagrams and activities (Quizlet Help: Subscribing).
- Try Learn and Test. One free Learn session, and one free practice test per set, as above.
- Study offline in the apps. On iPhone and Android you can study with Flashcards and Match and create sets without a connection; the apps save your eight most recently used sets automatically, and you can download others. Offline study is "currently only available on the iOS app and the Android app" (Quizlet Help: Offline). The article does not say whether a plan is needed.
- Export your own sets. The creator of a set can copy its terms and definitions as text. Images are not exported, and sets you copied from another user cannot be exported (Quizlet Help: Exporting).
How much does Quizlet Plus cost?
Quizlet sells four kinds of plan, according to its help centre (Quizlet Help: Subscribing):
- Quizlet Plus: "extended access to premium study tools with monthly usage limits": practice tests, study guides, Learn and expert solutions. Billed monthly or yearly.
- Quizlet Plus Unlimited: the same tools plus Test, custom study paths, Progress and smart grading. Billed monthly or yearly.
- Family plan: a yearly plan that shares premium access between students, with no free trial.
- Quizlet Plus for teachers and group subscriptions for schools.
The help centre gives no prices. The US App Store lists these in-app purchases: Quizlet Plus at $9.99 and at $44.99, Quizlet Plus Unlimited at $44.99, Quizlet Teacher at $35.99 and Quizlet Go at $44.99 (App Store, checked 31 October 2026). The store does not show which price is monthly and which is yearly. Prices on the website can differ from App Store prices. Quizlet shows its web prices at quizlet.com/upgrade; that page did not open for us on 31 October 2026, so web prices are not listed here.
For vocabulary alone, a subscription mainly buys Learn and Test. The flashcards and their spaced repetition mode are where the long-term remembering happens, and the help centre does not list them among paid features.
Does research show that Quizlet works for vocabulary?
Yes, with caveats. Özdemir and Seçkin (2024) searched for studies from 2005 to 2023, found 94 and included 23 that compared a Quizlet group with a control group taught with traditional methods or other technology:
- g = 0.62
- effect on vocabulary achievement, 21 studies, described by the authors as moderate
- g = 0.74
- effect on vocabulary retention, 5 studies
- g = 0.37
- effect on attitude, 2 studies, described as small
- 22 of 23
- studies were on learning English; 14 were at universities
Three caveats. The results varied a lot between studies (I² of 82.3% for achievement). The retention figure rests on five studies. And the studies compared Quizlet with classes that did not use it, not with other flashcard apps, so they show that regular Quizlet practice helps, not that Quizlet beats Anki or Brainscape.
What Quizlet does not do for vocabulary
- Spaced repetition on your phone. The scheduled review is a website feature; the apps have Flashcards and Match for offline study, but the help centre says spaced repetition is web-only (Quizlet Help).
- A documented long-term schedule. The help article describes when a card returns after one rating, from minutes to four or more days, and one setting, new cards per day. It does not describe the intervals after that.
- Choose the words for you. Quizlet reviews whatever is in your set. Which words are worth a card depends on your goal: the most frequent 2,000–3,000 word families are the ones worth learning deliberately, according to the research on vocabulary size, and words from your own reading come with context, as our guide to learning words from reading explains.
- Full export. Only sets you created can be exported, as text without images (Quizlet Help). Anki, for one, imports text with fields separated by tabs, commas or semicolons (Anki manual).
What are the alternatives to Quizlet for vocabulary?
The table lists apps for reviewing vocabulary whose own sites say they bring items back for review over time. Full language courses are left out, though they have more ratings: Duolingo has 5,548,546 and Busuu 101,439 in the US App Store (iTunes).
Sorted by the number of App Store ratings in the US, from Apple's iTunes lookup API, checked 31 October 2026.
| App | US ratings | Average | Your own words? | Review | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memrise (Memrise Limited) | 217,564 | 4.8 | Ready-made courses with native-speaker videos; the home page does not mention your own lists | "Smart review" (the home page gives no details) | Free to start; a paid plan unlocks extra features |
| Brainscape (Bold Learning Solutions) | 21,607 | 4.8 | Yes: make or import unlimited flashcards, with images and sound | Spaced repetition based on how confident you rate yourself | Free for your own cards; paid plans add AI card creation and certified decks |
| Noji (Delighthub) | 14,020 | 4.6 | Yes: your own decks, or 50,000+ ready-made ones | Spaced repetition; Premium adds custom presets | Free core features; Premium adds unlimited daily learning, images and audio |
| Knowt (Knowt Inc.) | 11,211 | 4.7 | Yes; Knowt says it imports Quizlet sets in two clicks | Learn mode and a spaced repetition mode | Knowt says its Learn mode is free with unlimited rounds |
| AnkiMobile (Anki Software) | 2,370 | 4.0 | Yes, or shared decks | SM-2-based scheduler or FSRS | $24.99 once on iPhone; Anki is free on computers and Android |
| Clozemaster (Language Innovation) | 2,095 | 4.8 | Ready-made sentences with a missing word, in 50+ languages | Sentences come back for review over time | Core features free; Pro is paid |
The number of ratings shows how widely an app is used, not how well it teaches. Readlang Mobile, made by the team that writes this site, is not in the table: it is a reading app that saves the words you translate and does not schedule reviews. It is not affiliated with Readlang (readlang.com).
Which one to pick depends on where your words come from. If you have your own list, Brainscape, Noji, Knowt and Anki all take it; Anki gives the most control over the schedule, and our spaced repetition guide compares it with tools that collect words while you read. If you would rather not make cards, Memrise and Clozemaster supply the material.
How to use Quizlet for vocabulary
- Use the spaced repetition mode on the website for daily review, and Flashcards or Match in the app when you are offline.
- Recall before you flip. Say or write the meaning first, and press Repeat if you could not, however familiar the answer looks. Testing yourself is what makes words stick; see recall, do not reread.
- Keep new cards small. Set "New cards per day" to a number whose reviews you can finish; we suggest starting at 10 to 15 new words a day, as explained in how many new words a day.
- Put a sentence on the card. A word with the sentence you met it in is easier to remember and to use than a bare translation.
- Check shared sets before you study them. Anyone can publish a set, and the App Store listing notes user-generated content, so a shared set can contain mistakes. A set you copy from another user also cannot be exported later; making your own avoids both problems.
To set this up together with a daily reading routine, see our first-week plan.
